GLUTEN-FREE FRIENDS:

An Activity  Book for Kids

by Nancy Patin Falini, MA, RD, LDN    $18.95

Published by Carol Fenster, Ph.D.'s Savory Palate Press

Imagine what it's like for a kid who can't eat  pizza or spaghetti like all the other kids. Now, there's a book to explain celiac disease to small children and help them understand what happens to their bodies and why it's important to make the right food choices to stay healthy.

The book is a series of delightful illustrations featuring two friendly celiac kids, Megan and Ben, who show how they make the right food choices to stay healthy so they can take part in their favorite activities. The book is intended for kids ages 4-11, and offers helpful suggestions for parents or caretakers to use as they guide the children through the book. Many parents told us, "I wish I had this book when my child was first diagnosed."

The book is an activity and coloring book, so the child can color the pages and complete the educational activities--- then refer to the book again and again to reinforce the concept of what gluten is, how to know which foods it's in, and what to do in certain situations when they aren't certain if the food is safe.......such as at school or a friend's house.

Dr. Alessio Fasano very graciously agreed to write the foreword for the book and many of the nation's leading physicians and dietitians helped us by reviewing the book and offering their constructive input.

Nancy Patin Falini is a nationally-recognized dietitian specializing in celiac disease for children since 1988, so she is truly an expert is knowing how to work with celiac children.  She is a guest speaker at the CSA/USA conference in Buffalo, NY next month.

I'm sure you'll want a copy of Gluten-Free Friends for that special celiac child in your life.  For more information or to purchase the book, go to my web site  www.savorypalate.com. Group discounts are available for ROCK groups, etc. Contact me about this at carol@carolfenster.com.

I was especially interested in food for children when my 14 month old grandson , Keene,  visited us for 2 1/2 weeks this August. He is an avid eater (probably inherited that tendency from me!), but I was also reminded of how challenging it is to feed a small child and make sure that food is nutritious AND safe.

Like most toddlers, he wants to feed himself so that means making sure the food is bite-size so he won't choke on it and finger-friendly so he can pick it up himself. I wondered about the additional challenges this would mean if he eventually developed food sensitivities. Pondering this for awhile, I was even more in awe of parents whose small children have celiac disease...or any food sensitivity! You are truly incredible!

Cooking Catalogues for Those Hard-to-Find Items

I'm often asked where I get some of my unusual utensils such as a measuring spoon that fits into a spice jar or special whisks that reach to the corners of pots and pans.

The answer is: CATALOGS.  While many of these items are also available at kitchen stores (if you live in a city such as Denver with many kitchen stores), I also subscribe to many of the catalogues for chefs and cooks. Here are some of my favorite catalogs or sources,  listed by web site, since they're on-line as well:

Food for Thought

Are your kids (or other family members) learning good nutrition by watching what you eat?

Where In the World is Carol?

In early September, I traveled to San Diego, CA where I was a guest speaker for Ann Whalen's Gluten-Free Living magazine conference. I spoke on how to use alternative grains in our diets and how to make the easy, delicious pie crust  from my book,  Gluten-Free 101. We had wonderful gluten-free food all weekend and were entertained and informed by wonderful speakers such as Dr. Alessio Fasano, Cynthia Kupper of GIG, Danna Korn...and others! The marvelous resort hotel was wonderful!
